K-9 Units and Cops

We had a blast and so did the dogs.

The homeschool group I belong to managed to get the base’s K-9 unit to show up at our meeting. We were treated to three dogs and several cops doing demonstrations.

The kids were in love.

We watched as the dogs sniffed out drugs.

We watched as they jumped the hurdles put up. And the kids laughed and giggled as the ‘bad guy’ was attacked.

The two most memorable parts were where a dog abandoned the chase of his ‘bad guy’ in favor of sniffing out the drugs he’d found previously. As his handler said ‘they’re just like people; sometimes they cheat too’. Guess that’s what they get for leaving the suitcases out for the remainder of the demo!

The second most memorable occasion was when a dog was running full tilt after his bite only to stop dead right next to a suitcase they were running by. The guy he was chasing had been looking over his shoulder during the run and ended up stopping as well stunned that he was abandoned. It was considered a two for one deal.

Both times the dogs got lots of praise and their toy of choice. Everyone thought it was hilarious; both the two for one and the one trying to get the easy way out for his toy.

The kids had a blast. The adults didn’t mind it much either. The dogs certainly didn’t mind playing and being petted after it was over.

After the dogs left the kids even got to play in the cop cars.

Over all it was a great way to spend a Monday morning.
