Lately we’ve been inundated with grasshoppers. You can’t walk without them hopping away from you. For a while I wondered if they were cicada but decided they were just some desert verity of grasshopper. All of them have had the same tan coloration.

I have never seen such a vibrantly colored grasshopper. I’m not even sure it is a grasshopper. I’m pretty sure it is related to one though. I was unable to get a good shot of his back legs since they’re tucked in, but they’re the same bold orange as the tips of his antenna.

Well whatever he is he’s a colorful thing.

    It is a Mexican General. They are very impressive and beautiful. Come in different shades of colors, usually black or green with yellow markings sometimes other colors sprinkled in. The male has very bright red ” wings” absolutely gorgeous. Very common here in SE AZ and almost in ” plaque ” proportions.
